Over the weekend, as I was recovering from the Thanksgiving Day feast, I laid on the couch channel surfing when I came across what ended up being a great documentary. I will just say that three men attempt to run 7100 km across the Sahara in 80 days. Even if you don’t like documentaries, it is very motivating and most certainly captivating, you have to watch it. If you have Showtime Extreme, it is scheduled to replay on 12/1/09 at 5:05pm otherwise I’m sure you can find it at your local movie rental house.

Running the Sahara

Yesterday I ran some long distance intervals, it was a fairly short run but I feel they were effective. Along with those I had a pretty good upper body workout. Nothing too intense just several sets of leg lifts, dips, and a variety of push ups. Regardless of the intensity of the workouts, I shouldn’t have run today. Still, I got out there for a very brief jog and at the very least I stayed consistant with my runnig average mile time. Below are some stats from the the run;

Start Time: 11:23 am, End Time: 11:57am,
Duration:0:32:04(h:m:s), Distance: 3.12mi,
Avg. Pace: 10:17per mi, Avg. Speed: 5.83mph,
Climbed: 86ft, Burned: 393 calories

Just a short post via my iPhone. First and foremost the new 2.0 WordPress makes it easier to blog on the fly.

I ran five miles total. One mile intervals was my goal. First mile was 0:10:15, second was 0:18:00, third was 0:08:35, fourth was 0:18:00 and fifth was 0:08:55. The third mile was the most exciting as I shaved 3 minutes off my best mile time. Altogether a good run, going to aim for a longer run tomorrow at a steadier pace.

It’s 4:11 am est and I have one really crappy reason for being up this early…work, too boring of a story. Since I’m here and not doing any of it, what better time to let you know what has been going on. SOooooo, the laptop is still jacked up but looking to get another really soon. What do you think Mac vs PC? I recently had some extended family members insist Macs were for dumb people, I couldn’t help but laugh and hardly entertain the subject, WTF? It really stinks not having either. This has not been much of a burden as far as the fitness blog goes because I haven’t had very much exercise being sidelined by ‘kidney stones’. I know, I know… the pain caused by them is no where near my legs and feet, BUT  a supernatural hand grabbing your back and side at the same time is  REALLY distracting. The doc says they will pass and for the most part I feel fine now  but every now and again the pain flares up and becomes a nuisance. I am beginning to think it is not stones at all. This is taking a bunch longer than the last time, sucks!   Who knows maybe he is right but either way I look forward to restarting progress towards 13.1 this upcoming weekend, can’t wait. I have not gotten out to run in a couple weeks so it will probably be a considerably shorter run.  My exercise recently has been me trying to do a head stand, they seemed much easier in my younger years and on the same day several scores of abdominal sets consisting in a variety of targeted areas. Oh yeah and the occasional beer curl. I only have roughly 16 weeks before the half marathon, barring any additional set backs, I think I have enough time. This weekend I plan on having a good run consisting of quarter mile intervals and some core workouts too. I will update with Runkeeper through here.

UPDATE:11/14/09

Turns out it is a kidney stone causing all discomfort.

This morning’s exercise was great but engulfed with pain and self-motivation to finish. I guess you can’t have one without the other. Or can you?

It’s not what you are thinking. The pain that I am experiencing is not a direct result of the exercise. It actually has nothing in association with. A few days ago I noticed some tenderness in the kidney region of my back and radiates towards the front lower right quadrant of my stomach. Appendix? Kidney Stones? Having had stones in the past, I thought I was passing one. The thing is, I have completely changed my diet including my liquid intake. This change was done roughly 6 months ago and at this point I have several cups of Joe throughout the day and around a gallon to a gallon and a half of water. The stone theory is out and I’m left with just the pain. Of course it could be a number of things but the one that sticks out is a previous injury. That’s prompts the domino effect of thoughts and I realize that a few days ago I did something to re-injure myself. Long story short; I was standing on a platform and reached down to pull up a 100-115 lb machine up on to it. Problem is that the top of the machine was sitting about a foot lower than the platform. If you ever have to do this…don’t! I have had a strained abdominal wall in the past and think I strained it again. It’s pretty much waiting for me to lift the next heavy thing for it to become a full on hernia. Regardless, I decided to get up and run this morning. I pushed through the discomfort and actually made progress. I ran a bit further and in less time than last week’s run. I’m excited to see that I am making some progress however I am puzzled and frankly concerned by the pain. Even though it’s not crippling, it is dull, persistant, and matches the similar pain in my right ankle that was acquired during my run. I stepped into a rodent hole covered by high grass and leaves. OK, this is definitely a rough start towards the half marathon. Check out the stats on this run.

6:45 am The silence is pierced with the most obnoxious sound. After fighting with the snooze option I finally got up but only to walk a dog that’s not mine. She does her business and back in the house. So fun. It takes me less than ten minutes to gather all my things, out the door, quick stretch and so begins my run.

7:15 am Since my last long run I’ve been looking forward to this one and I have to keep reminding myself to find the right pace and maintain because I have routed the longest run for myself, to date. Alright so the problem to mapping out a run on a computer is that Google Maps does not really show elevation. Other than the inevitable fatigue and longer distance running the first and biggest obstacle came around a mile and a half into my run. I’m running on a road that I have traveled, in a car, countless times but never realized how much of an incline it has. In all honesty this particular stretch of road, overall, really wore heavy on me. I was consistently climbing and just when I thought it would level off it drops rather quickly and now I’m struggling to slow my momentum to keep from rolling head over heels to a major road at the bottom of the decline.

(Tangent) I managed to get past that hurdle and moved to one of the longer portions of straight road. As I ran along the sidewalk I noticed that every now and again car tire grooves were gouged into to the curb grass over the side-walk and back into the grass on the other side of the sidewalk. The tracks swerved back and forth then suddenly stopped. After the abrupt stop you can follow the more shallow grooves back onto the road. Curiosity prompts the question as to whether or not the drivers were drunk or falling asleep. All things considered, my money is on the alcohol induced erratic driving.

8:00 am At this point I’m a bit under three-quarters of the way finished and feel GREAT! The wind is blowing discolored leaves all around and just as I round the second to last corner there is an instant change in the temperature that takes the focus away from the run and directs it towards its randomness. I just kept running wondering why the sudden snap and just as that thought crossed my mind the clouds’ bottom tear open and drop an onslaught of rain. The remainder of the run was done so with persistent rain, a new yet very pleasant ending.

8:29 am Done. Considering it’s only the third clocked run and the longest distance run, I feel great and might even go for a run tomorrow. I don’t know if my times are par or sub par but either way I feel accomplished. Thinking back I probably would have run further and longer had it not been for the rain. I know it sounds like a cop-out but my running partner is my iPhone which doubles as my time keeper and iPod. I was drenched when I got back home and rather lucky that my phone is fully functional. A few things made a difference this go around and aided me in finishing the planned route. First, I can be pretty stubborn, so pacing myself early so that I don’t gas out in the end. Having to call for a ride wouldn’t go over well this time of day. Second, I mapped the route so that when I realized I didn’t want to run, it would be too late. The fact that I can be bull-headed aids this as well. Finally, I read an interesting article forwarded to me by a co-worker who is an avid runner, someone who I look to for tips and stuff. He’s experienced in the field.

Take the jump and read it. Pretty cool. Running Times for the article also check out RunKeeper to see my numbers on this trip. Until next time.

UPDATE; Post-Run

I actually feel remarkably fine. Sure there is a bit of  soreness in my lower extremities however it is mainly my quads that are achy. Surprising as it was my calves and shins in the most pain yesterday during the latter portion of the run. My intent was to get up early again today and  go for another run but the day led my in a different direction. Regardless, I’m anxious to run again.  I would rather be well prepared before committing and entering a race. I’m beginning to get a bit obsessive about this. No?

It seems that my blog has flatlined and I’m sure it has something to do with the lack of posts. As you might remember, per my Technical Difficulties post, I have limited web access. However, I’m still here, alive and kickin’. Since my last ‘Saturday‘ run I haven’t had the time for an all out full-blown  workout. Ok…I haven’t made the time, I’m still working my way out of the rut but never-the-less I’m doing something. Nothing major just quick 10-15 minute workouts that include some basic but core exercises (push ups, sit ups, dips, squats)or runs on the treadmill.

Update on my running; I am starting training for a 10k hopefully around the middle of November. That should solidify my spot as an amateur runner and there will no longer be a need for my current self-given title of Aspiring Amateur Runner.  Keep checking back as I will do my best to blog during lunch or from my iPhone.

My laptop is jacked up! For whatever reason the battery will not hold a charge and the plug is not feeding power to it either. For the time being I cannot use it until it’s fixed or I get a new one (probably time for one). Unfortunately my ability to blog is limited to my iPhone and work pc, both not blog friendly. Either way I cannot wait until WordPress 2 is approved by Apple, crisis would have been averted, but until then keep checking back! Hopefully won’t be too long until the next post. I will blog through the means that are still available when time permits.

I got up around eight this morning, an hour later than I wanted to, and finally got going. I’m on my third consecutive Saturday going for a run around Smyrna.  Today I decided to challenge myself a bit more by only targeting  hills, keeping a consistent pace throughout the entire route and running further than the last couple weeks. It’s a chilly 56 degrees out so I threw a skull-cap on shorts, short sleeve shirt on and took off. Mistake! What I didn’t account for was the wind factor. Ok so it wasn’t that bad until I was coming up a hill half way through the run. I’m drenched in sweat and I can feel the wind piercing right through me not to mention, for whatever reason, it was harder to climb while it pushes towards me. However I tread forward and leading the way is my bright red nose a la Rudolph. Just around the three-quarter mark my lungs say keep going, my mind is hanging in there but my knees, ankles and the balls of my feet have waived the white flag, but never the less I keeping pushing. I made a detour and head in a different direction, away from the house, around a park and then  back towards home.  It was a good morning. I ran further, stayed consistent and even shaved a minute off my mile time.

Here’s the new way I’ll be sharing my stats. I use Runkeeper on my iPhone  to track everything and it also allows me to share my runs, pretty cool check it out;
